Film Industry Terms

The film industry, like any other, has it's share of special and unique terms. Being a popular medium, some of them are well known such as what an Actor/Actress is but there are many other terms that many people are not always clear about. Here are a few of them, to be expanded as I learn about more of them.

Actor - An individual, male or female, portraying a role, not necessarily that of the individual in real life, related to a fictional, real, or voiced character.

Art Director - Handles the administrative tasks of managing budgets, projects and personnel, schedules, and overall quality control of the set construction within the film.

Cinematographer - Manages camera and lighting, and may also be a member of either crew, to capture and portray video imagery.

Costumer Designer - The designing of clothing with styles appropriate to the vision of the script and Director. Usually intended to enforce a time, geography, or theme as dictated by the storyline.

Director - Guides and oversees the overall artistic and technical content of the film by managing and arranging sets, cameras, lighting and the actors as translated from the script, personal style, and/or studio/producer demands.

Film Editor - The orderly sequencing of individual film cells into a complete film, scene by scene, in-line with the Director and screenplay's perspective. The Film Editor usually works on this alone, for the most part, until primary filming is complete and the Director is able to devote more time to this component of the process.

Makeup Artist - Makeup and prosthetics placed on the actor that express the visual condition and circumstance for the actor.

Music Director - The 'conductor' and manager of music to be selected for a film to build the vital tone of a scene.

Producer - Coordinates, supervises, and controls the film-making funding, hiring, administrative, and distribution processes. There is some overlap between this position and that of the Director, but, for the most part, the Producer holds the 'reins' of managing the entire film-making process. Many Directors, and sometimes, Actors become Producers. In these case, they are individuals who play major roles or have had tremendous, pivotal and notable success in the past.

Screenwriter - Author, whose writing, is arranged and blueprints the film-making process.

Sound Editor - Somebody who gathers, records, and edits sound recordings to seamlessly blend into the film's other audio components that include music and dialog.

Special Effects - Visual and auditory effects - using models, camera tricks, and computers - to render unreal images to audiences.

Stunt Person - A unique feat of skill or physical maneuver that is thoroughly choreographed to portray realism in actions displayed on film while maintaing safety precautions.
